The Nilay Patel Senior Renal Cancer Research Fellow
12,600 new kidney cancer cases are diagnosed every year in UK. Incidence rates for kidney cancer are projected to rise by 26% in UK between 2014 and 2035 (Cancer Research UK).
There has always been a quest for a minimally invasive or ablative treatment for renal cancer like, Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), Cryoablation, Microwave and High Intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). Out of these HIFU is the truly non invasive ablation technique.
HIFU has shown promising results in cancer of prostate and is under investigation for ablation of renal tumors. Human Kidneys are situated deep, move with respiration and are surrounded by thick layers of fat.
We are conducting research to study the transmission of HIFU waves in the tissues and on factors which may predict the response to HIFU treatment for renal cancer.
